We visited this ancient site in Ireland on Irishowen Peninsula on a Trafalgar tour some years ago but only spent a frustrating 20 minutes there which left me wanting more.
I feel so blessed to be able to return there to wander around it at leisure.
It is an eerie place, powerful, high, high on a hill, silent except for the whistle of a kites out hunting for their prey.
Other tourists were there with their voices lowered in a respect reminiscent of being in a cathedral or in a sacred place.
I sat with my eyes closed on the lower steps imagining a time long ago when ancient people gathered for an solstice ceremony.
Suddenly, the kites were whistling just above my head, so I opened my eyes and looked up.
On the narrow top rim, suddenly there appeared the figure of a tall woman, long red hair blowing wild in the wind, striding confidently along like a messenger from times past.
I called out asking if I could take her photo and she nodded.
We met again later as we both went to duck through the doorway at the same time.
Bettina is a local resident with a deep devotion to, and love of, this site.
She comes up during the equinoxes each year to watch and photograph the sun rise sending a wide beam of light through the doorway, slowly moving across the ground and creeping up the stone wall.
Every 18 years, the rise of the full moon does the same.
Drones are used now to gain a birds eye view as well..go check it all out!
